Contribute to a Better World

The centerpiece of the framework: students Contributing to a Better World, putting their learning to use as active citizens, working for social justice, environmental stewardship, and healthy, equitable communities (e.g., citizenship, service, advocacy). This outcome is a key goal of character development in EL Education.

Character is developed over time. Each layer provides a foundation for the one above. All the core Character outcomes are part of EL Education's three-dimensional view of student achievement.

How does this work?

EL Education's three-part vision of character for students is at the core of the Character Framework: Contribute to a Better World, Effective Learners, and Ethical People.
The academic environment is designed to support character growth (Compelling Curriculum, Student-Engaged Assessment, Deeper Instruction).
The character core is supported by a positive student identity (Agency, Purpose, Belonging).
The school’s learning community creates the positive context for character growth to occur (Empowering Leadership and Crew Culture).

Schools establish and cultivate Habits of Character, such as Respect, Responsibility, Courage, Kindness, and promote and discuss these habits every day, within and beyond classrooms. The school community exemplifies educator Kurt Hahn’s vision that we are all “crew, not passengers,” working together as a team for the common good.

- We've written a lot of DBQs, so we already understand the perspective of writing a DBQ essay.

- Now we're actually thinking like a person who designs DBQ essay and it takes a lot more thinking, it makes you think like, is this document useful? Are you giving the student the resources he or she needs?

- Most 10th grade classrooms are focused on writing a DBQ essay. You guys took it a step further, and you created your own DBQ essay. And then, you took it a step even further, and you thought about the thinking of the creation.

- Specifically for images, I feel like we should look at how much they say, because we have the entrance to Auschwitz. If you don't have background knowledge on that, you would never guess what it is, right? That was one of the documents I picked for the DBQ, and I had to like, pair it up with another picture, because it's like, not something you can pull from.

- Fantastic! So, does it give the student enough information? What connections did they see, and what disparities did they see between our shared vision of what historians do, and what we're doing as history teachers in this project task.

- I feel like it's the job of a historian to come to the conclusions by analyzing the documents, and then it's the job of the history teacher to take these ideas that have already been formed, and pass them onto the students. It gets them to think about the why.

- Don't dismiss service for the sake of losing academic rigor. They need to coexist. Don't sacrifice what gives purpose to what you teach us and what we want to learn.

- After one funeral, the daughter of that vet came to us and thanked us for creating the documentary of her father, because they played our work during his service. At that moment we knew that the frustrations and the struggles we faced to produce the vision we wanted was worth it. We ask that if you are currently serving, have served, or lost someone in your family from serving, please stand so that we may recognize your sacrifice.

-Friday after school, me and my friends were walking down to the bus stop. All of a sudden a guy just walks by, he's yelling racial slurs,

- [Female Announcer] In response, both students and teachers at Casco Bay High School decided that action needed to be taken to show support for those students affected.

- The most important thing that I've learned from Expeditionary Learning is the importance of having social justice issues at the core of your curriculum. Kids are gonna be excited and inspired by it. It's what gets them engaged, heart and head. The second reason is 'cause it's the right thing to do, because we need kids fighting for social justice issues, we need them prepared to take on the issues of the day. The sum of kind of the structures and the million everyday actions of people in those structures is what leads to kids having the courage to bring their full voice to the world.

-Everyone is welcome here, no hate, no fear...

- So the incident showed us how resilient we could be in the face of adversity.

- The whole school went down to march. That's what Casco is all about, having each other's backs, being, like I guess, like a second family.

- Celebrations are an opportunity for us to invite the people that we've worked with all year, the experts we've worked with, the people have come into the classroom and the people we've been out to see.

- Getting kids ready for a night like this happens all year long. Kindergartners researched an individual bird. The kids went through four to five drafts of their bird. Their research and artwork are all gonna be put together on a note card and then those are sold to the community and the money that's collected from those note cards are put towards Idaho rehabilitation and conservation efforts. This evening of celebration really proves and shows that they can do it and that they can do anything.

- We've had an essential question since day one of this project and been trying to accomplish that. And that question was, can describing the humane experience of immigration change stereotypes we see?

- The students just found out that the money their book is raising is actually going to get one of the immigrants that they interviewed their green card. So, you know, it gave them chills, it gave me chills, it was phenomenal to see that it really is changing people's lives!

- We're the next generation, so we could change the world by taking on these topics.

- The students took ownership. They took complete ownership because they knew they were responsible for sharing that human's story.

- [Teacher] This is a compelling topic where a lot of our students see themselves in the story. "So they had to make do with whatever was at hand."

- [Student] When we started reading this book, I heard a lot of kids from Africa, not just me, they were like, "finally we're learning something "about the whole world in Africa."

- [Teacher] When they are compelled and interested in the topic... Why would there be fear? Connie? ...they are willing to work really hard and work with challenging texts.

- [Connie] Because she might lose her brother and her dad, and she doesn't want that to happen.

- [Teacher] When they see that they are ready, have some knowledge to bring to it, they're gonna feel like they can walk through the door. I'm very purposeful about groupings within my classroom, and thinking about the best way to give all students the opportunity to talk with their peers and to learn from each other and also to teach one another.

- [Teacher] They choose the centers in the morning and then when it is their center time they go and they are completely independent. Being independent is so important for kindergartners. They're making choices and learning how to talk about their work. A good problem-based task for kindergartners is something that really intrigues them. And so that could be the materials are interesting or the problem itself is really interesting. In this case, they were really in to helping the pre-K students.

- What are your ideas for pictures? Sophia?

- You can make a number line and they can say which one is less than and which one is more.

- A number line, great, what else?

- [Ameerah] If we do not stand up for what we believe who's going to do this for us? My classmates and I worked with our teachers and school leaders to take on a serious problem in our community: gun violence. Hundreds of incidents of gun violence occurred right in our school neighborhood. And 96% of students in my school personally knew a victim. What can a group of middle school kids do to address such a serious problem? More than you might think. We met with families, community leaders, legislators, clergy, and police. We researched the lives of local peacekeepers. Members of all these groups who dedicated their lives to keeping and spreading peace. We celebrated those life stories in a book we wrote ourselves, professionally published and shared nationally. We created public service announcements that were shown on television and viewed by leaders of Chicago.

- I want to be a professional dancer when I grow up.

- I want to be a doctor when I grow up.

- When I grow up, I want to be a policeman.

- We organized a city-wide day of peace…

Do they really get it?

- So, thumbs up, thumbs down, do you guys feel like that part is--

- [Elena] Are they not really getting it at all? Then the teacher can feel confident they've got this target, they really know what to do, they really know where they're going with it. And then you know, when there's some students that are kind of this way, they can kind of assess okay, this student's gonna need some more help. And I think that really goes back to the whole topic of what Odyssey is really about is making sure that all students succeed and that all students are doing well and that no student is falling short while the rest are moving ahead.

- Awesome.

- To do a student-led conference, you can be in first grade, second grade, or third grade, or fourth grade, or fifth grade, or you can be in kindergarten. Insect expert group is ladybug.

- [Teacher] And they will share their scientific drawings and their learning so far.

-I've really seen labs excite my kids. It's like ignited this inner fire. There's this like crazy hum that rises up in the room.

- Wait, wait

- Whoa, the sparrow.

- They're learning through play, they're learning from each other, nothing feels overwhelming. There's this sense of joy, Labs are important because they bring joy to the room, joy to the learning and the content.

- I think this expedition works because first of all, the content is extremely compelling for students. Their experience with the interviewees creates an emotional connection to the content.

- Julia Adams is a selfless woman who accomplished a lot in her life time. During her senior year she befriended Josephine Boyd, the only African American student in the newly integrated school.

- She went over to Josephine Boyd and asked her to sit with her and her friends at lunch. This was an act of kindness that would change both of their lives forever.

- You know it is really wonderful to find that something small that you did has an impact on the next generation.

- If felt good to do it, her story was important because she helped Josephine Boyd become the first African American to integrate Greensboro high school and her story needs to be heard.

- [Caitlin] Their work is a part of something much bigger.

- Textbooks are often behind the times, they do not reflect how we are and where we've come from and where we come to. And this kind of presentation by these young people I think would be just an absolute wonderful experience for everybody to have because we are making some strides in this nation.

- Welcome to the second-grade expedition celebration. Today we are celebrating months of hard work and are premiering our ebook, Slithering Snakes Stories.

- [Narrator] High quality reading, writing and speaking happen when kids feel passion and purpose for their studies. In second grade, a conservatory lab charter school in Boston, Massachusetts, students research snakes for their study called, Don't Be Scared: The Truth About Snakes.

- Look at her tail, what did you notice about her tail? Isaac.

- It's round and short.

- [Narrator] When student learning results in high quality products, there's a deeper level of effort and engagement. In prior years, studies of snakes culminated in books, posters and a music video viewed by over 40,000 people.

- We're at the point where we're wrapping up our case study and investigation into the use of this talen gene therapy, which is a particular gene editing technique that's being used to combat Duchenne's disease. We are going to be able to have a bioethical debate or an academic conversation that talks about the use of talen gene therapy as a means to combat Duchenne's and they produced a figure that I think is gonna be interesting to us. To match sort of where their level of science is, I went to the figures and the data tables and found this particular figure that was demonstration of what happens when this gene therapy is used.

- So we go into the document and we'll look for everything we know and we'll try to piece it together.

- The stop is no longer there.

- So basically after they, they go back into the amino acids they basically readjust the reading frames.

- [Teacher] Sometimes the conditions are ideal for students to do some deeper thinking. Those can include students being really engaged in the topic. They have the familiarity with the background knowledge. They also are very comfortable using vocabulary and interacting with that vocabulary and they are aware that there is more that they need to understand.

- The previous principal, Kim Reed, led the staff through the process of starting to change the culture here. That's where EL education came in. I came on board the following year, getting through core practices. It was one of those moments of oh my gosh, where you have been all my life? I felt the crew's spirit when I arrived. People were doing work together. They were invested.

- [Female] It resonated with a lot of us that this is how I wanna teach, and this is how I want my kids to learn.

- That has really gotten the attention of our district because they wanna know what is really happening because we are absolutely seeing those results. The model itself

- is a different approach. It allows everybody to reach for their potential. I know I've changed a lot.

- [Male] EL has brought us together in kind of a common mind.

- [Female] And that felt really powerful that it was coming from us.

- We just are inundated with data, and the stacks of papers that come with it. And our goal, was to take those stacks of papers and numbers, and connect it to a real child. And we try to look at ways that we can meet the child where they are. And as a group of educators, which includes the classroom teacher, the instructional specialists, the administrators, and any other adult that may be supporting that child to come together, know who this child is, and who he or she is as a learner. And talk about instructional practice, and how we can move it forward. And once you make it teacher-friendly, then teachers begin to own that data.

- Most of you took your DRA on January 13th, and then you're gonna see...

- [Sheela] And the press there is now complete the cycle and bring it to the kids. Because they are really the actual owner of that data. 'Cause that data belongs to them.

- Simplemente estamos inundados de datos, y los montones de papeles que vienen con eso. Y nuestro objetivo era tomar esas pilas de papeles y números, y conectarlos a un niño real. Y tratamos de buscar formas en que podemos encontrar al niño donde está. Y como grupo de educadores, que incluye al maestro del aula, los especialistas de instrucción, los administradores, y cualquier otro adulto que pueda estar apoyando a ese niño, para unirnos, saber quién es este niño, y quién es él o ella como aprendiz, y hablar sobre la práctica de instrucción, y cómo podemos avanzar. Una vez que lo conviertes en amigable para los maestros, entonces los maestros comienzan a dominar esos datos.

- [Sheela] Y la urgencia ahora es completar el ciclo y llevarlo a los niños, porque ellos son realmente los verdaderos dueños de esos datos. Porque esos datos les pertenecen.
